Paul works as a folk arts educator, taking music, song and dance into schools. In 2013/14 he took folk music into schools in Cambridgeshire as part of the landmark "Full English" project, run by the EFDSS and funded by the national lottery.
Pre-school and Nursery Children
Paul has a wealth of fun songs for children to join in with, including both familiar songs and some fantastic new discoveries from the folk tradition and beyond. Along with action songs, Paul also introduces folk dance and playground games.
Primary Schools
Paul is an enthusiastic teacher, including dance, song and music in school sessions. Folk music is a great educational tool and be tied into the broader national curriculum, as well as providing entertainment and teaching music skills. Children can learn folk dance including basic ceilidh dances, historical dances, morris dance and maypole dancing, which covers skills required under physical education under the national curriculum, which requires pupils in key stage 2 to "perform dances using a range of movement patterns". Folk song can be taught, relating to local and national history, also covering literacy by examining the songs and their structure. This can lead to written work by the children who can write their own songs in a folk format/style.
The videos below show how folk music, song and dance was used in schools right across England in the EFDSS Full English project.
